Update: Cold days, dissertations and all-night study sessions

Yet again updates have been slacking. This time, however, I have a valid excuse: Dissertation. I think anybody who has written or is currently writing a dissertation will agree with me how time consuming it can be. My brain is feeling rather frazzled from taking notes while walking, reading up on London and writing reports on every walk I take around areas/boroughs of London. However, it does seem to be coming along quite well, so I can’t complain too much.

Tuesday this week I ended up going to a blues jam night in the Spice of Life bar in Soho which was really fun and, taking into consideration the area, fairly cheap. As you’ll see from the review, Lauren was due to be coming down for a few days to attend an interview (and see me, of course), but thanks to the job centre she wasn’t able (nee, allowed) to. Feeling very disappointed I thought I’d see if Time Out was able to recommend any free music events for me to attend where I could drown my sorrows in J2O and crisps. After some searching I was in luck and discovered the blues jam. The rest of this story is continued in the music reviews section.

Walking London aka Dissertation is, as mentioned above, coming along well: I’ve got around 3-4000 words written by hand so far with another 2 or 3 walks to report on so that’s all good. These past couple of weeks, I’ve been considering setting up a page for my dissertation to give people an idea of what it’s about and possibly receive some feedback on what I’ve done some far. Maybe I’ll get onto that tomorrow/next week when my brain’s a little more recharged.

I regards to book reviews, I have 3 books here that need to be reviewed so that’s a bit more work to be getting on with next week. Maybe it’s best I take a week off from walking and just lock myself in my bedroom with a pile of snacks, a gas cooker and lots of energy-inducing substances (by which I mean Pro-Plus and strawberries or similar as caffeinated drinks (excluding cider) are no longer part of my diet). I’ve been a student for three years, yet every time the semester begins to come to an end it’s the same series of knackering events: 24-48 hour study sessions, flagging and slapping myself round the face to remain awake. [Insert “It’ll all be worth it in the end” comment here.]

Eroticus is slowly getting longer, but I’m mainly focusing on scribbling out the second draft up to where the first draft is, just so I don’t have to spend weeks rewriting every page as a second draft in one go. More on this is in the main Eroticus section.

Life in general isn’t too bad. It’s cold and I’m low on money, but everything else is hunky-doodle. Even seeing Black Sabbath with my dad and stepmum in three weeks at the O2 so that should be rather fun. Before then, though, there’s a reading/open mic event at UEL on Tuesday in support of the Pussy Riot members who were sentenced to two years imprisonment and have since gone missing and Thursday is graduation day so I’ll be going to that to watch everyone collect their degrees whilst wearing silly gowns and hats.

Other than the above, I’ll just be trying to find as many free music and/or reading events as possible but that’ll probably be next Monday onwards. Saying that, it’s rather cold now so I might just end up staying inside unless I really have to leave the house.

Trivium – Brave this Storm review/download

Written for Relive the Music

——

When it comes to releasing new songs and albums Trivium are frequently criticised for their change in sound and even appearance with each new album usually being compared to 2005’s Ascendancy or 2008’s Shogun yet they still push on and release new albums sounding different to the previous one.

Brave This Storm from the new album Vengeance Falls begins with a Trivium sound of fast guitars before the drums kick in with a beat similar to the intro of Pull Harder on the Strings of Your Martyr followed by clean vocals not dissimilar to their second album The Crusade.

The song follows this thrash sound of fast guitars and cleanish vocals with the odd scream thrown in throughout. Sure, it’s not Ascendancy, but bands like to change and mature and it appears Trivium is doing the same. Music, however, is subjective so others may disagree, but we’ll leave that to the comments section once you’ve had a listen:

Personally, I quite enjoyed the track. As I said, it’s no Ascendancy track nor does it appear to have the groove of Shogun’s first track Kirisute Gomen (or Let’s go Eat Ramen, if parody is your thing), but I’ll definitely be checking out the album when it becomes available.
